Calfee Road Bikes

Gold Country has been selling Calfee road and tandem bikes for nearly the whole nine years we've been in business. We stock a couple rideable demo bikes in a 52cm Luna Pro (Dura-Ace 9spd Triple group) and a 58cm Tetra Pro (10spd Campy Record group). These bikes are available for extended test riding. Please call or send an email to set up an appointment.

Luna Pro
The Luna was conceived as a model to compete with the bigger brands. With a ride quality that is stiff yet comfortable at the same time, the Luna is also the toughest frame of Calfee's line-up. The thicker walled carbon fiber tubes withstand crashes that would send others to the repair department. The Luna is semi-customizable with head tube extensions and various paint jobs. Add the Cross option to make a great Cyclocross bike!

The Luna uses the standard modulus 33 msi carbon fiber with some 42 msi fiber mixed in for added stiffness.

A 54 cm Luna Pro frame weighs 2.8 pounds and carries a 10 year warranty.

Tetra Pro
Calfee's classic frame, backed by a 25 year warranty. The 54 cm size weighs 2.5 pounds.

The Tetra is molded in one layup, where the tubes are mitered to each other and laminated directly to each other with metal dies. The resulting joint has a long tapered transition from one tube to the next, following the stresses evenly.

The Tetra tubes were designed to have the optimum stiffness to weight ratio and also have a thick enough wall to be crash tolerant. The fiber orientation of the tubes gives the best combination of stiffness and comfort for everyday riding. The intermediate modulus fiber is strong and very stiff but not too brittle.

The Tetra was originally designed in 1987 and has been refined to its current incarnation over the years. As the oldest continuously produced model of carbon fiber bicycle frame in the world, it has evolved to a state of perfection and value unmatched by any other frame.

Dragonfly Pro
Calfee's lightest and most technically advanced frame. Although it weighs only 2.1 pounds in a 54cm size, it is plenty stiff and carries a 25 year warranty.

The Dragonfly was designed to be the lightest possible frame without sacrificing stiffness and ride quality. Calfee uses high modulus carbon fiber in all the tubes (55 msi) as well as the lug areas (42 msi). Previously, a frame built with all high modulus fiber would be too brittle. They incorporated Boron fiber into the three main tubes to add some toughness and compressive stiffness. Combined with the super high tensile stiffness of the carbon, the result is a frame material with the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio on the market.

The lugs are pressure molded from high modulus fabric. They are then meticulously carved to the optimum shape, taking into consideration the weight and intended use by the rider. They happen to look good because of their form-follows-function aesthetic.

The dropouts are also carved out to their optimal shape, saving 15 grams off the standard dropouts. This may not seem like much, but the way to make a 12 pound bike is to address every component and look for opportunities for weight savings, no matter how small. The trick is to do it without sacrificing strength and durability. As in nature, the Dragonfly is one of the most optimized and evolved structures to be found.
